To drive in India, a full valid driver's license from the country of residence is required and must have been held for a minimum of one year. UK licence holders need to present the photocard.
An International Driver's Permit (IDP) is highly recommended for foreign drivers who want to rent a car in India. For driver's licenses from countries not part of the international driver's license treaty, an official translation of the license must be presented with the original license.
Please note that an International Driving Permit (often referred to as an International Driver's License) cannot replace the requirement for a regular driver's license. And you must carry your current overseas driver’s license, IDP or translation with you all the time when driving in India.
The minimum age to drive in India is 18 years (age may vary by car category). If you're under 21-25, you are likely to have to pay a young driver fee. If you're 71 or older, you may have to pay a senior driver fee.
*Attention! Some car rental companies would have different requirements. Please check Terms and Conditions during the booking process.
